A Canadian in Fleming Island

Located in Northeast Florida, south of Jacksonville, I was fortunate to visit Fleming Island for the first time this past weekend.

When I would think about the cities in Florida, my mind instinctively pictured Miami, Orlando or Tampa. I had never heard about Fleming Island, but I’m here to tell you I was pleased with this charming little city.

Here’s what I learned about Fleming Island, during my time there:

  • Located 21 miles south of Jacksonville, there are many restaurants, stores and bars in the area.

  • It is a prosperous city known for its strong sense of community, as well as natural beauty, with street-lined palm trees and serene lakes.

  • One-level houses are the most common type of homes, especially in suburban neighborhoods.

  • Because of the proximity to the ocean, it’s not possible to dig out for a basement in Florida.

  • The focus on community, affordable housing, and quiet atmosphere make it an appealing living space for seniors.

  • My favorite – the “Florida Room” or “sunrooms” – offer extra space in the backyard, and protection from the bugs and elements. Ideal to spend time with guests, when they are visiting.

Would I go back to Fleming Island?

Definitely.

It was refreshing to escape the cold temperatures of Toronto to the sun-filled skies you will find in the state of Florida. The quiet atmosphere is appealing, and it’s also close enough to Jacksonville if you’re looking for a major city with attractions.

Fleming Island is also close to St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S., which is easily accessible by car and is, at most, a 45-minute drive.

If you happen to venture into the state of Florida, I’d highly recommend Fleming Island; you won’t be disappointed.

If you’ve visited Fleming Island, or any other cities in Florida, feel free to share your experiences!
